About Gale Sayers

After bursting onto the international stage in 1965, Gale Sayers established himself as one of the best players to have played in the NFL. He spent his whole time in the league as a player of Chicago Bears where he played as either a return specialist or a halfback. He, however, began his professional career with the Kansas Jayhawks team, which represented his college.

Aside football, Sayers was also a businessman and started a firm known as Crest Computer Supply Company in 1984.

Family

He was born to parents, Bernice Ross and Roger Winfield Sayers. He was the senior brother of former football player, Ron Sayers. He also had a brother called Roger.

He was married to Linda Lou McNeil between 1962 and 1973. Some months after his divorce, he wedded Ardythe Bullard.

Achievements

In 1965, he was crowned the league’s “Rookie of the Year”. Four years later, he was adjudged the “Comeback Player of the Year”. He also played in four Pro Bowl games.

In 1977, his name was added to other legends in the ‘Pro Football Hall of Fame’.

Trivia

Chicago Bears’ number 40 jersey, as well as, Kansas Jayhawks’ number 48 shirt have been retired in his honor.

He was known by the alias, "Kansas Comet".
