About Galileo Galilei
Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer, physicist and mathematician whose immense contribution to the scientific revolution earned him the name the "father of science". Among his most notable accomplishments include discovering the four largest moons of planet Jupiter and observing the phases of planet Venus. He was also the first to discover that the surface of the Moon is not smooth.
Personal Life
He was the first of the six children born to famous musician Vincenzo Galilei and Giulia Ammannati. Throughout his life, he never got married. He did, however, have a romantic relationship with Marina Gamba, with whom he fathered three children: Virginia (later known as Maria Celeste), Livia and his only son Vincenzo.
Trivia
Contrary to popular belief, he did not invent the telescope bur rather used his knowledge in mathematics to improve significantly upon it.
In 1633, he was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of heresy (opposing the teachings of the Church) for saying that that the Earth and the other planets revolve around the Sun.
