About Gary Hart
Gary Hart began his career as an attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice where he worked until 1965. He later moved to the Department of the Interior where he served as the solicitor’s special assistant.
His political career began around 1972 when he was selected as the campaign director for George McGovern. Three years later, he was voted into the United States Senate as a representative from Colorado. The Democratic politician held other political positions before heading the country’s Special Envoy for Northern Ireland. In 1988, he contested for the presidential slot of the party, but withdrew due to an alleged extramarital affair.
Family
At birth, he was named Gary Warren Hartpence and was raised by Carl Riley Hartpence and Nina Pritchard, his parents. His wife Oletha Lee Ludwig, whom he married in 1958, died in 2021. The couple had two kids.
Education
In 1958, he graduated from Southern Nazarene University (then known as Bethany Nazarene College). He later studied at Yale Divinity School and Yale Law School.
Trivia
In the film, “The Front Runner” which was released in 2018, his character was played by Hugh Jackman.
He has also authored many books with some titled “The Republic of Conscience” and “The Good Fight: The Education of an American Reformer”.
