About Gary Larson
Gary Larson tried his hands at cartooning while on a break from his job as a music store worker and after submitting his work to a magazine based in Seattle, he got published in 1976. The cartoonist went on to get his single-panel cartoon series, originally named “Nature’s Way” purchased in 1979 and promoted for syndication by the San Francisco Chronicle, which changed the series’ name to “The Far Side”. The series ran in syndication from 1980 to 1995, when Larson decided to retire due to fear of churning out mediocre content. He returned to publishing comics in 2020 with “The New Stuff”.
Family Life
He grew up in University Place, Washington. His mother, Doris, was a secretary and his father, Verner, was a car salesman. He has an older brother named Dan. Since 1987, he has been married to an anthropologist, Toni Carmichael.
Achievements
He has been honored with the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award and Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award.
Trivia
He has worked as a cruelty investigator on behalf of the Humane Society.
