Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher was a renowned military officer who led his valiant army against French Emperor Napoleon I on a number of occasions, most famously at the Battle of Nations in 1813 and at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
Early life
The Germany-born commander was the son of Christian Friedrich Von Blucher, a retired army captain. His mother, Dorothea Maria von Zulow, was also of noble descent. Gebhard began his path into the military at the early age of 16.
Career Highlights
The General Field Marshall began his career in 1758 in the Swedish army. He was later forced to fight for the Prussian military because he was a prisoner of war. Blucher was promoted to Colonel due to his outstanding contribution during the French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802). He later became a lieutenant general in 1801.
Blucher distinguished himself in several wars, such as the Battle of Prenzlau, Battle of Leipzig, and the Battle of waterloo.
Personal Life and Death
Blucher married Karoline Amalie von Mehling in 1773. Upon the death of Karoline in 1791, he went ahead and tied the knot with his sister-in-law Katherine Amalie von Colomb.
The famous Prussian-German commander died on September 12, 1819, aged 76. He was survived by seven children.
