Early Life
She is the daughter of Griffith Jones and Irene Jones. She has two siblings, one of which is Nicholas Jones who, like her, is also an actor.
Gemma graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Her career as an actress on stage and on screen began in the 1960s when she played Anya in “The Cherry Orchard” (1965) at the Nottingham Playhouse. Playing the character of Queen Elizabeth I in the BBC serial “Kenilworth” in 1967, she gained more fame in British television.
She introduced herself to an international audience for the first time when she took up the role of Empress Frederick in the television series “Fall of Eagles” in the mid-1970s.
In 2001, she was cast in the role of Pamela Sharon Maguire’s romantic comedy film “Bridget Jones's Diary”.
She is famously remembered for her role as the school nurse, Poppy Pomfrey in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” (2002), “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” (2009), and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2” (2011).
BATA Award
In 2014, she bagged the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Mary Baldwin in the British film drama “Marvellous”.
