About Gene Sperling
In 1993, Gene Sperling was named as the deputy director of the National Economic Council (NEC). Three years later, he was made the director of the council by the then President of the United States, Bill Clinton. In 2002, a year after leaving office, the renowned lawyer established Brookings Institution’s Center for Universal Education.
He returned to his directorial position at NEC in 2011 during the Barack Obama-led administration. In 2021, Joe Biden named him as one of his Senior Advisors.
Personal Life
He spent his early years with his parents Lawrence and Doris Sperling. He has been married to Allison Abner.
Education
The famous lawyer attended Community High School and Pioneer High School. He continued at the University of Minnesota where he read political science. He later attended Yale Law School and then the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Trivia
He’s also the founder of Global Campaign for Education-US, an international think tank.
Ahead of the presidential elections in 2008, Sperling was named as an economic advisor to the then candidate Hillary Clinton.
He collaborated with Barbara Herz to publish the book “What Works in Girls' Education: Evidence and Policies from the Developing World” in 2004.
He played tennis during his days in the university.
