About Gene Tunney
Gene Tunney was a popular American boxer who made his name in the heavyweight division. Nicknamed “The Fighting Marine”, Tunney won all his fights at the division before announcing his retirement in 1928. He held the title as the world’s heavyweight champion between 1926 and 1928.
He also competed at the light heavyweight level and was the champion in that division in 1922 and 1923. His only professional loss came in this category to fellow American fighter Harry Greb.
Family
His original name was James Joseph Tunney and was the son of John Tunney and Mary Lydon. In 1928, he married Mary Josephine Lauder with whom he had four kids.
Achievements
In 1928, he was named the “Fighter of the Year” by the Ring Magazine, becoming the first person to win the award. He has been elected into some prestigious institutions like the International Boxing Hall of Fame, the United States Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame, and the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

He participated in the First World War as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was featured in the 1926 film “The Fighting Marine”.
