About George B. McClellan
George Brinton McClellan was an American politician, soldier, railroad executive and civil engineer. He is remembered best in history for his contributions to the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War and then later as the Commanding General of the Peninsula Campaign in the American Civil War.
He went into politics and unsuccessfully campaigned under the Democratic Party for the 1864 US presidential election, losing to Abraham Lincoln. He later served as New Jersey’s 24th Governor.
Family Life
He was born to Elizabeth Brinton and Jefferson Medical College founder, Dr George McClellan as the third of their five children. He had a daughter, Mary, and son, George Jr., with his wife, Ellen.
Legacy
His ability as a war general has generated controversy amongst historians. While some see him as a failure, others have praised his organizational skills and cordial relationships with his subordinates.
Death
He died on 29 October 1885 from a heart attack.
