About George Burns
George Burns was discovered at the age of seven when he sang while working with fellow young syrup makers in a candy shop. He went on to have over a 70-year-long career in comedy. He also appeared as an actor on radio and in films and television series.
He was known best for his four-decade-long membership of the comedy duo Burns and Allen alongside his comedienne-actress wife Gracie Allen. He achieved critical acclaim as Al Lewis in the film “The Sunshine Boys”.
Family Life
He was the son of Hadassah Bluth and Eliezer Birnbaum. Originally named Nathan Birnbaum, he changed it to conceal his Jewish ancestry. He was married to Allen from 1926 until her death in 1964. They had two children including Ronnie Burns.
Achievements
His role in “The Sunshine Boys” won him an Academy Award for “Best Supporting Actor”. He was also the first recipient of the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award.
Death
He passed away at the age of 100 on March 9, 1996, from a cardiac arrest.
