Personal Life
He was married five times and fathered five children with his first three wives. His fifth and final marriage was to actress Trish Van Devere, with whom he adopted a child. The marriage lasted from 1972 until his death in 1999. He also fathered one child out of wedlock.
Trivia
In 1970, he refused accepting the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Patton. His refusal to accept the award made him the first actor to ever turn down an Academy Award.
He was an atheist.
