Personal Life
During his birth, the name he was given was George Leonard Carey and he gained an education at Bonham Road Primary School but he struggled with school for a bit. After his time there, he continued his studies at Bifrons Secondary Modern School. Around this time, he decided he wanted to work and became an office boy for the London Electricity Board.
Career
Carey joined the Royal Air Force in 1953 where he worked as a wireless operator. He had started his journey to Christianity prior to his service and was a proud Christian. Around this time, he decided to get ordained. He started getting trained and got into King’s College London. He then started working at St. Mary’s Islington as a curate then he worked at St Nicholas’ Church as a Vicar.
He moved on to work with Trinity College as a Principal in 1981 then about six years later, he was posted to Bath and Wells as a bishop.
In 1991, Carey was made the Archbishop of Canterbury and it is known that he was the first person who did not attend school in Cambridge or Oxford but became Archbishop since the Middle Ages.
