About George Cayley
George Cayley was a highly influential figure in the history and development of aeronautics. He was a brilliant English aviator, inventor, and engineer, who made several groundbreaking inventions in aeronautics, most notably inventing the first working “glider” and creating the earliest “wire wheel.”
Background & Career Highlights
Between 1832 and 1835, he served as the Whig party’s representative in the House of Commons for Scarborough. In 1838, he assisted in the establishment of the UK’s earliest polytechnic, “the Royal Polytechnic Institution.” In addition, he was a one-time vice president of the prestigious “Yorkshire Philosophical Society” and a founding member of “BSA (British Association for the Advancement of Science)”.
Projects & Inventions
In 1799, he invented the modern configuration and design of the airplane as the flying machine with a fixed wing, which contained independent systems for control, propulsion, and lifts. He also identified drag, lift, thrust, and weight as the four main forces that affect “heavier-than-air” airplanes.
He notably built the earliest working model airplane and designed the components of vertical flights. In addition, he created the first glider that was reportedly capable of lifting a human.
The “Institution of Mechanical Engineers” credits him for inventing the “Hot Air Engine” in 1807.
