About George Enescu
George Enescu was a distinguished Romanian violinist and composer in the 20th century, rising to prominence for his renditions of Bach and his eclectic works. Enescu is widely regarded as one of Romania’s best musicians ever.
Background & Early Life
Enescu had an ambition of becoming a composer from age five. As a result, he began studying the violin at the Vienna Conservatory at age 7. By age 13, he had learned the formal symphonic innovations of the great Johannes Brahms. He then moved to Paris in 1895 to pursue violin and composition studies.
His famous “Poeme roumain” was first played in Paris, France, in 1898, and he was awarded the violinist’s first prize at the Paris Conservatory in 1899.
Major Works
His chamber compositions included 3 violin sonatas (the final in the famous Romanian style), 2 string quartets, and 3 piano sonatas. His orchestral arrangements included 2 Romanian rhapsodies, 3 symphonies, and a prelude on folkloric Romanian motifs. He also utilized Romanian national themes in his well-adorned opera “Oedipe.” He notably led the “Romanian School of Composers” in his later years.
