About George Fletcher Moore
George Fletcher Moore was a member of Australia’s elite class during the 1800s. He was an explorer and writer, best known for publishing “Diary of Ten Years Eventful Life of an Early Settler in Western Australia.”
Biography
Moore was born in Ireland and studied law at Trinity College. After realizing that his career options were limited back home, Moore opted to emigrate to Australia in 1830.
While there, he was made Commissioner of the Civil Court and also formed relationships with the Aboriginal people. He developed a dictionary of the Aboriginal language, “A Descriptive Vocabulary of the Language in Common Use Amongst the Aborigines of Western Australia.”
He married Fanny Moore in 1846. He later returned to Ireland with her during his last years. Moore died in 1886 in Ireland.
