About George Grosz
George Grosz was a prominent member of Weimar Republic’s New Objectivity and Dada art groups. His numerous caricatures, which depicted life in Berlin during the 1920s, earned him many admirers. Among his most popular works were “Den macht uns keiner nach (Made in Germany)” and “God with us (Gott mit uns)”.
Aside from his paintings, he was also a teacher and was best known for his time at the Art Students League of New York.
Family
He was originally named Georg Ehrenfried Groß and was raised by his parents who owned a pub. He got married to Eva Peters in 1920.
Education
Grosz was trained at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. He later attended Berlin College of Arts and Crafts.
Achievements
In 1950, he was made an Associate Academician at the National Academy of Design. Four years later, he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Trivia
In 1912, he published his first oil work.
He trained Romare Bearden.
He studied under renowned painter, Emil Orlik.
