Born in 1880 in New Orleans, he attended the local St. Vincent’s College.
Career Highlights
He started as an engraver, advertising artist and a political cartoonist for the Los Angeles Herald. In 1901, his futuristic single-panel cartoons were featured in the New York Evening Journal. Six years later, he worked as the house cartoonist for the Los Angeles Examiner, and set his daily gag comic, “Mr. Prones the Plunger,” in motion the following year. His most popular comic strip “Krazy Kat” ran for 31 years until his death in 1944.
Personal Life
He married Mabel Lillian Bridge in 1902 and had 2 daughters with her.
Recognition
In 2013, he was posthumously inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame. His works have been displayed in museums worldwide.
