About George I of Great Britain
George I of Great Britain is best remembered for being the King of Great Britain and Ireland who reigned from 1714 until his death in 1727. Upon his death, he was succeeded by his son George II.
Family Life
He was born to Sophia Stuart and Ernst August, Duke of Brunswick and Elector of Hanover. In 1682, he married his first cousin Sophia Dorothea of Celle, with whom he had two children: George II of Great Britain and Sophia Dorothea, Queen in Prussia. He also had three illegitimate children.
Trivia
He was accused of killing his wife Sophia's lover, the Swedish Count Philip Christoph von Königsmarck, whose body was thrown into a river.
After divorcing Sophia, he kept her captive in the Castle of Ahlden, where she remained a prisoner for the rest of her life.
