About George Marshall
George Marshall Jr. had risen through the ranks to make a name for himself in the United States Army prior to entering politics. As a low-ranked officer, he served in the Philippine-American War.
Under US presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, he served as the 15th Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1939 until 1945.
He was appointed the US Special Envoy to China in 1945 to handle negotiations to diffuse the Chinese Civil War. He also became the US Secretary of State and then the Secretary of Defense.
Family Life
He was born to Laura Bradford and George Catlett Marshall Sr. He had two elder siblings. He was married to Elizabeth Carter Coles from 1902 until her death in 1927. He later married Katherine Boyce Tupper in 1930.
Achievements
Marshall was decorated with military medals such as the Distinguished Service Medal and National Defense Service Medals. For his formulation of the Marshall Plan to “heal” post-war Europe, he received a Nobel Peace Prize.
Death
He died aged 78 on 16 October 1959.
