About George Pell
George Pell became an ordained priest of the Catholic Church in December 1966 and was consecrated as a bishop two decades later. The Australian priest served the metropolitan archdiocese of Melbourne as an auxiliary bishop from 1987 to 1996, when he was appointed as the Archbishop. He was moved to the Archdiocese of Sydney as Archbishop in 2001 and two years later, he was created a cardinal by Pope John Paul II. From 2014 to 2019, he was the first Prefect of the Catholic Church’s Secretariat for the Economy.
Family Life
His non-practicing Anglican father, George Arthur was a heavyweight boxing champion while his mother, Margaret Lillian was a Catholic.
Achievements
He was a recipient of the Australian government’s Centenary Medal in 2003. In 2005, he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia.
Trivia
In 2020, the High Court of Australia overturned a guilty verdict he received in December 2018 in relation to child sexual abuse allegations.
