About George Pickett
George Pickett was an officer in the United States Army who served in the Confederates States Army of the American Civil War during which he was promoted to a major general. Prior to the Civil War, he had fought in the Mexican-American War, particularly in the Battle of Chapultepec, and the Pig War of 1859. He is remembered best for his role in the Civil War’s Battle of Gettysburg, as a commander of a division that participated in an assault that has since come to be known as Pickett’s Charge. Following his division’s defeat in the Battle of Five Forks, he ended his military career.
Family Life
The eldest of the eight children born to Mary and Robert Pickett, he grew up on Turkey Island, Virginia. He lost his first wife, Sally Harrison Minge during the birth of their child in 1851 and married LaSalle Corbell in 1863. They had two children. Corbell wrote books about her husband’s life as a general (which have been suspected of being fictionalized).
