Notable Facts
In the 1900s, the Dempster Brothers Construction Company constructed several roads, railroads and dams across cities in states such as Georgia and Tennessee. Dempster became a three-time city manager of Knoxville between 1929 and 1945. A decade later, he served as mayor for four years. Under his leadership, the Henley Street Bridge and Bill Meyer Stadium were built. Upon its invention, the US Navy used Dempster dumpsters for waste collection during the Second World War.

In honor of his civil service, he was awarded the Father Abram Ryan Award by the Knights of Columbus.
