About George Stinney
Several decades after African-American child George Junius Stinney Jr. was wrongfully tried and executed on charges of murder, his name was brought back into news headlines once again. In December 2014, a court ruling determined that the trial he was made to stand in 1944 had been unfair. On June 16, 1944, Stinney was executed by electric chair after an all-white jury trial had found him guilty of murdering two white girls: seven-year-old Mary Emma Thames and eleven-year-old Betty June Ficker.
Family Life
He was born to Aimé and George Stinney Sr. He had two sisters: Aimé and Katherine, and two brothers: Charles and John. His father was a sawmill worker at Alcolu, South Carolina, where the incident occurred.
Murder Case and Trial Controversies
The murder victims’ bodies were retrieved from a ditch in Alcolu. It is believed that the girls sustained blunt trauma injuries.
Stinney’s defense lawyer did not present or cross-examine witnesses. The statement presented in court as Stinney’s confession, according to him, was forced out of him in return for food, having been starved for several days.
