About George Trendle
George Washington Trendle was a wealthy American business executive, lawyer and writer. He is best remembered as a Detroit television and radio pioneer for building the city's first movie theater and producing the famous "The Green Hornet" and "The Lone Ranger" TV and radio shows.
Early Years & Movie Theaters
He was born in Norwalk, Ohio, USA. In the 1920s, he earned prominence as a Detroit lawyer and was noted for his tough negotiations in leases and movie contracts. Trendle also invested hugely in Nickelodeons in the early 1900s. He built Detroit's first movie theatre in 1911 and owned over 18 movie theatres in the USA by 1928. He later sold most of his theaters and worked for the "United Detroit Theatres" until 1937.
Radio & Television Business
In 1929, he partnered with fellow theater owner John Kunsky and established the "Kunsky-Trendle Broadcasting Company". They also purchased the "WGHP" radio station in Detroit and changed its calling alphabet to “WXYZ”. Trendle was an active radio manager, earning prominence for producing and broadcasting "The Lone Ranger" and "The Green Hornet" on the station.
He co-founded the "Trendle-Campbell Broadcasting Company" in 1946. In July 1954, he sold his rights to "The Longer Ranger" series to "Wrather Corporation" for $ 3 million.
Death
He died of a heart ailment aged 87 on May 10, 1972.
