About George Vujnovich
George Mane Vajnovich was his full name, and he was a brilliant OSS (Office of Strategic Services) American intelligence officer during World War II. He is known for organizing “Operation Halyard,” a successful mission that rescued over five hundred Allied Airmen from Serbia (German-occupied Yugoslavia).
Background & Personal Life
He was of Serbian descent and was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. During his youth, he relocated to Yugoslavia and studied at the University of Belgrade. He met his spouse Mirjana Lazich during his studies. However, after N*zi Germany bombed Belgrade, they fled the city to Budapest, Hungary. They finally settled in Cairo, Egypt, where Vujnovich was employed by “Pan American Airways.”
World War II & “Operation Halyard”
Vujnovich was commissioned into the US Army during World War II. After the Army recognized he was of Serbian descent and had experiences in Yugoslavia, they recruited him to assist the US resistance in the Balkans.
In 1944, US bombers embarked on an unsuccessful bombing mission in Romania, which led to the capture of many airmen over Yugoslavia. He then developed “Operation Halyard,” which involved training Serbian-speaking officers to disguise and successfully get the airmen out by constructing a classified airfield.
