About George Whitefield
George Whitefield may best be remembered as one of the founders of Methodism but he is also notable as probably the first-ever celebrity preacher. The 18th-century evangelist met the other Methodism co-founders, John and Charles Wesley in the Holy Club of the University of Oxford during his time in the institution as a student. He was a great orator whose emotional and theatrical sermons attracted the attention of millions of people in Great Britain and the Americas.
Family Life
He was the youngest child of Elizabeth Edwards and Thomas Whitefield. He was married to a widow named Elizabeth Gwynne from 1741 until her death in 1768. Their marriage was purportedly an unhappy one and it produced only one son who died when he was four months old.
Death
He died at age 55 on September 30, 1770.
