About Georges Pompidou
Georges Pompidou was a French statesman and politician who later on became a president of France. He was also prime minister during the presidency of Charles de Gaulle.
Background and Education
He comes from Montboudif in Cantal, France. Both of his parents were teachers. He had his preparatory education (Khagne) at Lycee Louis-le-Grand. He then graduated from the École Normale Supérieure with a degree of aggregation in literature.
Before his political career, he taught literature at the lycee Henry IV in Paris. He was hired by Guy de Rothschild in 1956 to work at the investment bank Rothschild. He was later given an appointment as the bank’s general manager in 1956. He held this position till 1962.
He was later on hired by then-French President Charles de Gaulle to manage the Anne de Gaulle Foundation for Down syndrome.
George Pompidou later on became an assistant to the general commissioner for tourism, from 1946 to 1949. He again had the position of maître des requetes from 1946 to 1957 at the Conseil d’Etat, which was France’s administrative court.
In 1955, he went back to work at the Rothschild bank and became director general in 1956. From 1958 to 1959, he was an aide to President De Gaulle.
Following the resignation of Prime Minister Michel Debre in 1962, Pompidou was appointed to fill the position under then President de Gaulle. He served in the prime minister position from 1962 to 1968.
After de Gaulle’s term ended in 1969, Pompidou was elected president of France. He served from 1969 to 1974.
During his time as president, he maintained friendship and economic ties with Arab states and also provided France with a stable government and strengthened its economy.
He tied the knot with Claude Jacqueline Cahour in 1935. Claude was a modern art enthusiast and philanthropist. Claude and Pompidou adopted a child called Alain.
He passed away suddenly in 1974, aged 62. He thus died in office. The cause of death was blood cancer. The deceased French leader was survived by his wife and adopted son.
