About Gerrit Rietveld
Gerrit Rietveld was a Dutch furniture designer and architect. A key member of the artistic movement, De Stijl, he was well-known for the Red and Blue Chair which he designed in 1917.
Apprenticeship and Early Works
Gerrit abandoned formal education to become his father’s apprentice at age 11, but later had night school before taking a job at jeweler C.J Bejeer as a draughtsman where he spent about five years..
Associations and Major Artifacts
After 1917, he opened his furniture factory and associated himself with the Dutch art movement De Stijl in 1919. He had his artifact exhibition in Dutch as well as outside including the Bauhaus on the invitation of Walter Gropius in 1923.
He co-built the famous magnificent Rietveld-Schrader House in Utrecht with Truus Schroder-Schrader. The project influenced Schroder’s daughter, Han, who turned out becoming one of Holland’s first female architects. The house became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
He left De Stijl to join “Niuw Bouwen”, which he described as having more functional architectural styles, and the International Congress of Modern Architecture, both in 1928.
Among his works are the 1934 Zig-Zag Chair, the Sonsbeek Pavilion and the design of Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The latter was completed after his demise.
In 1961 Gerrit partnered with Johan van Dillen and J. van Tricht to undertake many home building contracts in Utrecht and other cities.
