About Giacomo Puccini
Opera composer Giacomo Puccini has been touted as Italian opera’s greatest composer second only to Verdi. He became one of the top experts of the verismo opera style. In 1883, he worked with dramatist Ferdinando Fontana to compose “Le Villi”, his first opera. In spite of his death several decades ago, his works “Tosca”, “La boheme” and “Madama Butterfly” are regularly performed in present times.
Personal Life
He was the last of five generations of composers from the Puccini family, being the great-great-grandson of 18th-century composer Giacomo. He was born to Albina Magi and Michele Puccini.
He grew up alongside eight siblings. He had a son with Elvira Bonturi, who was at the time still a married woman. They wed after her cheating husband died. Puccini himself was a chronic cheater.
Death
On 29 November 1924, he died of a heart attack. It was caused by uncontrolled bleeding from the aftermath of radiotherapy for his throat cancer.
