About Gianluca Vialli
Italian striker Gianluca Vialli joined Sampdoria in 1984 following an impressive display with his boyhood club Cremonese. With Sampdoria, he won three Coppa Italia titles, a Serie A trophy, and one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
His performance caught the attention of Italian giants Juventus who signed him in 1992. Within his four-year stay at the club, he won the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Cup, and the Serie A title. He later moved to England to sign for Chelsea F.C. With his new club, he won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and the FA Cup.
International career
Vialli played for his country at many international tournaments including the UEFA Euro and the FIFA World Cup. He was a member of the Italian team that reached the semi-final stage of the 1988 UEFA Euro which took place in West Germany.
Coaching career
During his latter years with Chelsea F.C, he worked as a player-coach. He became a full-time manager of the side in 1998 and held that position for two years. He later joined Watford as the head coach in 2001.
Other works
The renowned Italian soccer legend also worked as a commentator for media organizations like BBC, and Sky Italia. He was also one of the founders of Tifosy, a sports investment group.
Personal Life
He was raised alongside four siblings and became the husband of Cathryn White-Cooper in 2003. They named their children Sofia and Olivia.
Decorations
After the 1990/91 soccer season, he was adjudged the Serie A’s “Top scorer”. In 2015, he was inducted into the famous Italian Football Hall of Fame. He was decorated with the Commendatore Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana laurel.
Cause of Death
The former Juventus and Chelsea forward had a long battle with pancreatic cancer, which eventually led to his demise.
Trivia
Before his retirement, he ranked in Italy’s top-10 highest scorers in all major competitions.
He was the first player to hold both the gold and silver medals in UEFA’s three major club tournaments (i.e. UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup).
