About Giorgio de Chirico
Giorgio de Chirico was a renowned Italian painter whose works were largely appreciated after the First World War. The Greek-born painter was also known to be the originator of the art movement known as ‘scuola metafisica’.
Most of his works, which feature mannequins and Roman arcades, have been displayed in many museums and art centers across Europe. Records have it that his first work, which was titled “Flight of the Centauri, Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon and Enigma of the Oracle”, was produced in 1909. Some of his popular works were titled “The Enigma of the Hour” and “The Grand Metaphysician”.
Family
During his childhood, he lived with his parents, Evaristo de Chirico and Gemma Cervetto. His brother was also a painter who worked under the name Alberto Savinio. He married Isabella Pakszwer Far after his union with Raissa Gourevitch broke down.
Education
He had his early training at Athens Polytechnic. He was later trained by Carl von Marr and Gabriel von Hackl at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich.
Accolades
In 1958, he was accepted into the Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium as a member.
Trivia
His works were largely influenced by Friedrich Nietzsche and Arthur Schopenhauer.
His paintings were categorized under neo-Baroque and neoclassical styles.
He was the subject of the 2010 documentary entitled “Giorgio de Chirico: Argonaut of the Soul”.
