About Giovanni Battista Pergolesi
Italian-born composer Giovanni Battista Draghi lived a short yet successful life as an organist, Baroque composer, and violinist. Examples of his notable works are "L'Olimpiade" in 1735 and "Stabat Mater" in 1736.
Early Life
The composer was born to Francesco Andrea Draghi and Anna Vittoria Giorgi. He studied his musical techniques under great names such as Italian composers Francesco Santi, Geotano Greco and Francesco Feo in the mid-1720s.
Career
Pergolesi grew up to be one of the most important names for opera composers. His works, such as "La Salustia" in 1732, "Lo frate 'Innamorato" in 1733, and "L'Olimpiade" in 1735, are among one of the best Operas music made during his time. Pergolesi also made sacred music, including "Confitebor Tibi Domine” and "Mass in D" in 1732. However, his best-known holy work is his 1736 "Stabat Mater" composition.
Cause of Death
Pergolesi died in 1736 due to Tuberculosis. He was just 26.
Trivia
The composer’s life story was adapted into the 1932 Italian film "Pergolesi" which was directed by Italian filmmaker Guido Brignone.
