About Giovanni Falcone
Giovanni Falcone was arguably the best Italian prosecutor and “anti-Mafia” magistrate of the 20th century. He was a brilliant Italian judge and one of the earliest magistrates to identify the activities of the “Cosa Nostra” (Silicon Mafia).
Background & Education
He was born in Palermo, Italy. He read law at the University of Palermo and enrolled in various short courses at the Italian naval academy.
Career
He began to practice law in 1961 after graduating college and in 1964, he was appointed as a judge. He served as a District Magistrate for several years and then decided to pursue a career in penal law. He eventually worked as a prosecutor in Marsala and Trapani offices and then moved to Palermo’s bankruptcy court in 1978.
Major Cases
He was a member of the world’s first anti-Mafia task force, whose investigations led to the first-ever Maxi Trial against the “Silicon Mafia”. The investigation resulted in the arrest of over 100 criminals.
He completed the “Spatola case” for prosecution in 1981, allowing the prosecution to win over 70 convictions based on his solid evidence that “Sicily had become the primary gateway for heroin refining and exportation to the USA.”
Death
On May 13, 1992, the “Corleonesi Mafia” assassinated Falcone and his spouse in the infamous “Capaci bombing”. He died at age 53.
