About Giovanni Gentile
Giovanni Gentile was the originator of the fascism movement in Italy. He played a key part in the growth of Italian philosophy during the 1920 and 1930s. As a philosopher, he developed the Actual idealism doctrine. He documented his ideas in his numerous publications including “The Rebirth of Idealism” and “The Concept of History”. He also contributed to the 1932 essay titled “The Doctrine of Fascism” alongside Benito Mussolini.
Political Career
Gentile was also an active politician. He was mostly linked with Italy’s National Fascist Party. In 1921, he was voted into the Italian Senate. The following year, Mussolini named him the Minister for Public Education. He served in that position until 1924.
Personal Life
He was married to Erminia Nudi, and together they had six kids. One of their children, Federico Gentile would later become a renowned publisher.
Education
Gentile was a product of the University of Florence. He also studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore.
Cause of Death
The philosopher was murdered by a Bruno Fanciullacci-led group.
