About Giulio Andreotti
Giulio Andreotti joined the Italian Catholic Federation of University Students which marked the beginning of his journey in the political scene. He did this while in university. He became the president of the group in 1942, succeeding Aldo Moro. Two years later, he became a member of the Christian Democracy party’s National Council and later joined the Constituent Assembly of Italy in 1946.
The following year, he was made the Secretary of the Council of Ministers before he was selected to represent the people of Rome–Viterbo–Latina–Frosinone constituency at the newly-established Chamber of Deputies in 1948.
He became Italy’s Finance Minister in 1955 and three years later he was selected to head the country’s Ministry of Treasury. He held other ministerial offices before he became Italy’s Prime Minister in 1989. He served in that office until 1992 and was considered the most prominent and powerful political figure of the country’s First Republic.
Family
He lost his dad and sister Elena at an early age. He was married to Livia Danese and together they had four children including Italian businessman Lamberto Andreotti.
Education
Before joining the University of Rome, Andreotti studied at Liceo Torquato Tasso, Rome.
Trivia
He, alongside Mino Pecorelli, a notorious mafia capo, were tried for the murder of Carmine Pecorelli, a journalist.
He studied under Alcide De Gasperi.
After leaving office in 1992, he became Italy’s second longest-serving prime minister after the Second World War.
