About Giuseppe Bergomi
A loyal Internazionale, he made great strides in the Italian national team and appeared in four World Cups. In the two decades that he played for Inter Milan, he featured over 500 times and scored more than 20 goals. Owing to those appearances, it is often the case that he has been described as one of Italy’s greatest football defenders of all time.
Early Life
Born in Milan, Italy he started out as a player in the youth team in Settala. At the age of 16, he started training with the first team of Inter Milan. He debuted during the 1980-81 season and with consistency, he was called up into the 1982 World Cup Italian squad.
Career Highlights
His impressive skills earned him a place in the starting line-up against Poland and in the finals against West Germany. He appeared with Inter Milan in 20 Serie A campaigns and won the Scudetto once.
When the 1990 World Cup was hosted in Italy, he was made captain and he played in every match until Italy won the bronze medal. He, however, could not lead his team to the final. In his 4th FIFA World Cup, he made three appearances.
He hung up his boots in 1999.
Accolade
The defender was part of the squad when Italy won the 1982 FIFIA World Cup in Spain.
With Inter Milan, he won the UEFA Cup three times.
The former Italy international was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame in 2016. Four years later he was inducted into Inter Milan Hall of Fame.
Trivia
He was known to be hot tempered and a tough tackler.
