About Giuseppe Siri
He is known to have been the Archbishop of Genoa for about four decades and was also a cardinal of the Catholic Church.
Personal Life
In 1916, he got into a seminary in Genoa. He later went to Pontifical Gregorian University and became a priest at the age of twenty-two.
Career
In 1929, he engaged in pastoral work after earning a theology doctorate. When he got back to Genoa, he worked as a chaplain. He also worked as a public speaker, professor and preacher. In 1944, he became the Titular Bishop of Livias and Auxiliary Bishop of Genoa, and in the same year, he became Vicar General. Later in 1959, he was chosen to be the first president of the Italian Episcopal Conference by Pope John XXIII.
Death
In 1987, he resigned from his job and died not long after. He was laid to rest in Genoa at San Lorenzo metropolitan cathedral.
Achievements
He is believed to be instrumental in protecting and housing priests who had tried to save Jews in trouble from neutral Spain. He also provided financial and moral help to Christian-Democrat Italian resistance.
