About Glenn Curtiss
Curtiss was a 1964 National Aviation Hall of Fame inductee and American-born aviator who used to be a bicycle racer and builder. He later broke the boundaries of possibility and became a key figure in the aircraft industry in the United States.
Early Life
The aviator was born to Frank Richmond Curtiss and Lua Andrews. Although young Curtiss only made his education up to the 8th grade, his love for engineering was evident in his endeavors. Curtiss invented the stencil machine and the rudimentary camera during his youthful days.
Career Highlights
He began manufacturing Hercules bicycles in 1900 and moved to motorcycle design and racing in 1901.
1907 saw the aviator experimenting in aircraft manufacturing with famous Scottish inventor Alexander Graham Bell. They finally perfected their craft, tested the First Army dirigible Flight in 1908, and contributed immensely to WWI with their aircraft production. Curtiss also developed the first pontoon aircraft and a military flying school in 1911. He also developed other inventions, such as airboats, in 1923.
Personal Life
The aviator married Pearl Neff from 1898 to 1930. He died in 1930 due to an appendectomy complication. He was survived by 2 children.
