At the beginning of the 2015–16 soccer season, Argentine center-back Gonzalo Javier Rodríguez was named the captain of Italian side Fiorentina. During his five seasons with the team, he played over 200 games and netted more than 20 goals.
The Buenos Aires-born soccer star began his professional career in 2002 with San Lorenzo in his native country. He won the Copa Sudamericana trophy with the club before making the switch to Spanish club, Villarreal in 2004. In his debut season, he won the UEFA Intertoto Cup. He joined Fiorentina in 2012, after the Spanish team was relegated.
International Career
Rodríguez made his international debut in 2003. By the end of 2015, the center-back had made seven appearances for his country’s senior team, scoring one goal. Before his first senior cap, he played for the Under 20 side and was part of the FIFA World Youth Championship in 2003.
Trivia
He suffered a cruciate ligament injury in 2007.
He ended his professional career in 2020.
The former Villarreal star played alongside some prominent names like Borja Valero and Fernando Cavenaghi.
