About Gordon Allport
Gordon Allport, born Gordon Willard Allport, was one of America’s most brilliant psychologists of the 20th century. Allport was widely considered as one of the founding fathers of “personality psychology.” He was amongst the earliest psychologists to develop original theories on “personality.”
Background & Education
Montezuma, Indiana, was his birthplace. However, he was raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Glenville High School in 1915 and earned an academic scholarship that allowed him to enroll at Harvard University. In 1919, he graduated from Harvard with a degree in Economics and Philosophy. He also held a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
Career Highlights
After graduating from Harvard, Robert College in Istanbul employed him, and he taught philosophy and economics at the college for the following year.
In 1924, Harvard University appointed him as a social science tutor, and he became a psychology professor at the institution six years later. He was consistent in relating his social interests to his personality and was one of the earliest psychologists to introduce “humanism” into the study of psychology.
Major Works
His most notable works would be “Personality: A Psychological Interpretation” and “The Nature of Prejudice.”
Death
He died at age 69 on October 9, 1967, after months of battling lung cancer.
