About Gordon B. Hinckley
Gordon B. Hinckley is one of the prominent figures in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Joining the church at a very young age, Hinckley served in other positions before being named as the president in 1995.
Some of his previous positions were Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and First Counselor in the First Presidency. Due to his works, he was regarded as a revelator and prophet by some sections of his members.
Family
He was the son of Bryant S. Hinckley, a renowned LDS writer. His mother was called Ada Bitner Hinckley and was married to Ada Bitner Hinckley, who died in 2004. He was survived by five children including author Virginia Hinckley Pearce.
Education
After completing LDS High School, he enrolled at the University of Utah to read English Literature.
Honors
He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004. He was also decorated with the Boy Scouts of America’s Silver Buffalo Award. In 1996, the American Academy of Achievement honored him with the Golden Plate Award.
Trivia
Until 2022, he held the record as the oldest person to serve as the president of the church.
He was credited for writing the lyrics for the LDS hymn titled "My Redeemer Lives".
The celebrated American religious leader also published many books including “What of the Mormons? A Brief Study of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints”.
