About Gordon Banks
Widely considered as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all-time, Gordon Banks was a key member of the English squad that won the FIFA World Cup in 1966. He played for the England under-23 team twice before making his senior debut in 1963. He went on to earn an additional 72 caps before retiring from international duties in 1972.
Career highlights
The England soccer legend began his career in 1958 when he played his first competitive match for Chesterfield F.C. The following year, he joined Leicester City where he spent the next eight years of his career. He helped the team to win the League Cup in 1964.
He continued his career at Stoke City which he joined in 1967. He also won the League Cup with them in 1972. Other teams that he played for included Fort Lauderdale Strikers and St Patrick's Athletic.
As a coach
Banks had a short spell as a soccer manager. He was named the coach of Port Vale in 1977 before taking the reserve coaching role the following year. He also managed Telford United from 1979 to 1980.
Family
He was married to a lady called Ursula and together they had three kids.
Honors
In 1970, he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. He was voted the FWA Footballer of the Year two years later. Banks was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
Trivia
His splendid save during the FIFA World Cup in 1970 was named in the “100 Greatest Sporting Moments” in 2002. At age 15, he worked with a coal merchant as one of his baggers.
