He was the son of Gordon Meredith Lightfoot and Jessie Vick Trill Lightfoot. He lost his sister named, Beverly in 2017.

He received the "Governor General's Performing Arts Award" from the Governor General of Canada in November 1997.
Lieutenant Governor of Ontario awarded him with the "Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal" in February 2012.
He was inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in June 2012.
