Early Life
Wahl always enjoyed sports from high school. When he moved on to Princeton University, he decided to write about the school’s soccer team Princeton Tigers. His keen interest in soccer allowed him to study in Argentina where he spent time with the Argentine club Boca Juniors.
Career
The Kansas-born writer started working as an intern at the Miami Herald. Shortly he landed the coveted job as a reporter for Sports Illustrated in 1996, covering college soccer and basketball. He gave reports on several sports events such as the Olympics, World Cup, and NCAA basketball games. In just four short years, he was promoted to senior writer.
Wahl followed the life of soccer legend David Beckham and in 2009 published his best-seller “The Beckham Experiment”.
In 2020, his relationship with Sports Illustrated ended when he was fired for criticizing the CEO James Heckman.
Arrest in Qatar
During the 2022 FIFA world cup in Qatar, Wahl made news outside soccer when he was arrested and detained briefly for wearing a rainbow-themed t-shirt in support of the LGBTQ community.
Death
The famed journalist died just a day after turning 48. The American, who earlier complained of being unwell, was covering the semi-final game between the Netherlands and Argentina at the Lusail Iconic Stadium when he suddenly collapsed.
