Greta Thunberg is a prominent Swedish environmental activist. She has established herself in this regard while still being a teenager. And her particular cause is combating climate change.
Her mother and father are respectively named Malena Ernman and Svante Thunberg. He is an actor and she, an opera singer. Greta also happens to be a distant relative of Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927), one of the earliest and most-accomplished researchers of the greenhouse effect.
Thunberg herself first became caught up in the issue of climate change when she was eight-years old. And even at such a young age, she was so zealous about the cause that she encouraged her parents to lessen their environmental footprint. In fact Greta, being committed to her stance, sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 2019 due to her conviction not to fly due to CO₂ emissions.
It was during 2018, as a 15-year old, that she really started becoming famous. This was due to the “School strike for the climate” protests she initiated at influential meeting places in Sweden like the Parliament and Riksdag. In doing so she was oft absent from the classroom.
But eventually, on top of completing her education, she became a social-media sensation who gained an international following, having her speeches translated into other dialects, as well as dropping a few famous quotes. And her protests also began to extend outside of Sweden, though she still made the Swedish Parliament her focal point.
So to make a long story short, Greta Thunberg became a global celebrity whose claim to fame is fighting climate change, one of the hottest international issues in the world during the early 21st century.
And it is not only her tenacity in heeding this call which has earned her this attention but also the frankness of her speech.
Indeed, despite suffering from a handful of mental and emotional illnesses, she is very effective in getting her point across.
Greta has garnered accolades others can only dream of. For instance, in December of 2019, she set a record as being the youngest individual ever to be dubbed Time Person of the Year. This occurred when she was 16-years old. A few months prior to that, in September of 2019, she spoke in front of world leaders at the UN Climate Action Summit which was held at the UN Headquarters itself. Earlier that same month she gave a speech to the US Congress.
In March of 2019, she was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Indeed she became important enough to garner the personal attention of US President Donald Trump, whom she got into a minor tiff with, in late 2019.
