About Guadalupe Victoria
Guadalupe Victoria was a revolutionary and Mexican army general who fought against the Spanish Empire in Mexico’s War of Independence, eventually becoming the first president of the country in 1824.
Childhood & Education
Born Manuel Félix Fernández, Victoria was orphaned as a young boy and was sent to live with his uncle. He attended the Seminary of Durango and later enrolled at Colegio de San Ildefonso to study law, graduating in 1811.
Rise to Presidency
He joined a rebellion group who were against Spanish rule in 1812. After the death of the rebellion leader, Victoria led a guerrilla war against the Spanish, which led him to become Mexico’s first president from 1824-1829.
However, his time as president was marred by constant conflict and his vice president led an unsuccessful revolt against him. Victoria was succeeded by Vicente Guerrero.
Personal Life
Victoria married María Antonieta Bretón y Velázquez in 1841. He died three years later in 1843.
