About Gunther von Hagens
Originally named Gunther Gerhard Liebchen but famously called Gunther von Hagens is a brilliant German physician and one of the world’s best anatomists. He is best known for inventing “Plastination,” a technique used to preserve biological tissues after the death of the human or specimen.
Early Life & Education
He was born in Alt-Skalden, Poland. As an infant, he had hemophilia that made him spend about six months in the hospital. Although the illness limited him from some childhood activities, he drew inspiration from his condition and decided to pursue a career in medicine.
In 1965, he entered the University of Jena and read medicine. Then, in 1970, he moved to West Germany and did further studies at Lubeck. Finally, in 1975, he received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg.
Invention
In 1977, he conceived his invention of the Plastination technique while looking at some collections of specimens preserved with plastics. He researched and experimented on the idea for about six years before he derived the refined design of the process.
He got the technique patented in 1978. However, in 1995, he introduced the “Plastination” technique to the entire world, with his first human corpse exhibition at “Body Worlds.”
