About Gus Dorais
A 1913 All-American winner, Charles Emile "Gus" Dorais was a renowned American football player who also chalked up great success as a coach in the same discipline.
Education
The NFL player was the son of David and Malvina Dorais. He first graduated from Chippewa Falls High School and later completed his college education at the University of Notre Dame.
Career as a Player
The NFL player made his professional debut with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team in 1910. He played for the team for more than 2 years and went on to sign for the Massillon Tigers in 1915. Dorais also played as quarterback for the Fort Wayne Friars in 1916 and finally settled with the Massillon Tigers until his retirement in 1919.
Career as Coach
Dorais delved into the coaching world and took up the management of Dubuque from 1914 to 1917. He also had a few spells with numerous other teams, such as Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers. He also coached some college basketball teams, most notably the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Men’s Basketball team and the Detroit Mercy Titans men’s basketball team.
Achievements
In 1954, he was honored as a coach by being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Death
The former coach passed away in 1954, aged 62. The cause of death was arteriosclerosis.
