About Gustav Hasford
The brains behind the movie adaptation “Full Metal Jacket” in 1987 is none other than Jerry Gustave Hasford, whose account of the wars was put in his semi-autobiographical novel “The Short-Timers” in 1979. The veteran United States Marine Corp was a war correspondent during the Vietnam War (1955-1975).
Early Life
Born Jerry Gustave Hasford in Russellville, Alabama, this American novelist and poet joined the United States Marine Corps in 1966. Aside from being a war hero, Hasford was also a war journalist and wrote stories for famous news houses such as the Leatherneck Magazine, Pacific Stars and Stripes, and Sea Tiger.
Early Career
Aside from being a decorated marine, Hasford was also a very talented writer. The marine published his first notable work called "Bedtime Story" in 1972, which was the first time anyone wrote about the war by veterans. Other notable works from the marine include "The Short-Timers", "The Phantom Blooper," and "A Gypsy Good Time," which he wrote in 1992.
Story of his Death
Hasford's career didn't end on a good note as he became quite poor with a failing health condition. He died from untreated diabetes and heart failure in 1945.
Achievements
Hasford was bestowed upon the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Valor Device during his tour in Vietnam in 1968.
