About Gustave Eiffel
While working for Compagnie Belge, Gustave Eiffel designed many bridges and structures which caught the attention of many institutions and individuals. In 1865, he created his own company which gave him the opportunity to work on many historical structures.
In 1887, he, with support from other members of his company, started to design what would be known as the Eiffel Tower. The project was unveiled two years later at the Exposition Universelle world’s fair. Aside from that, Eiffel is celebrated for designing the metal framework of America’s famous ‘Statue of Liberty’. Other notable structures that he worked on include the Garabit viaduct railway, and the San Pedro de Tacna Cathedral in Peru.
Family
His birth name was Bonickhausen dit Eiffel, and he was raised by his parents Alexandre Bonickhausen dit Eiffel and Catherine-Mélanie Moneuse. Between 1862 and 1877, he was married to Marie Gaudelet with whom he fathered five kids.
Education
Before attending École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, Eiffel schooled at École polytechnique, and the Collège Sainte-Barbe.
Decorations
He was a recipient of the Samuel Langley Medal, and the Officer of the Légion d'Honneur.
Trivia
Charles Nepveu, a railway engineer, was his first employer.
He turned his attention to aerodynamics and meteorology after ending his engineering career.
